Pompoko
Pom Poko is an animated feature written and directed by Studio Ghibli’s co-founder Isao Takahata. Premiering in Japan in 1984, the film addresses ecological and social issues through the story of the tanuki, magical creatures of Japanese folklore. The film, recognised for its rich narrative and detailed animation, offers deep reflection on the issues of urbanisation and conservation. It received Japan’s Mainichi Film Award for Best Animation Film in 1995.
