Twelve-year-old Pai, granddaughter of Chief Koro, is a gifted, sensitive, and determined adolescent. Since her brother is dead, she is also the only one able to carry on the important role of village chief. But Koro, guardian of a thousand-year-old tradition, refuses to accept Pai as his heir.
